One of the goals of the Gardeners' Guild of Braintree is to promote interest in and knowledge of our environment, its protection and its preservation. For the 20th consecutive year, the Guild has promulgated this by donating books related to these topics to every grade in every school in the Braintree public school system to be used in their media centers.
Lucille Barton, GGB founder and retired Braintree school teacher, along with Catherine Avellino, Ross school teacher and fellow guild member, selected six books this year for their appropriateness and appeal to each grade level. Guild member Judy Caristi attached bookplate labels to each of the 22 books donated. President Maggi Johnson made the formal presentation to Dr. Peter Kurzberg, Superintendant of the Braintree Public Schools, at the Highlands School on September 27th. Nancy Pelletier, Principal and Ann Moore, GGB Publicity Chair attended the presentation.
Each of the six elementary schools - Flaherty, Highlands, Hollis, Liberty, Morrison and Ross - received three books: "Crow Call" by Lois Lowry; "We Planted a Tree" by Diane Muldrow; and "A Drop of Water" by Walter Wick.
The East and South Middle Schools received "The Big Idea Science Book" by DK Publishing. Braintree High School received two books: "Living Off The Land" by Chris McNab and "The Bizarre and Incredible World of Plants" by Wolfgang Stuppy, Rob Kesseler and Madeline Harley.
This program is entirely funded by the GGB as one of its many community endeavors. Its primary annual fundraiser is the Christmas House Tour, this year entitled "Christmas on Tremont Street". As usual, it will be held on the first Sunday in December from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Boutique Sale, also on December 5th, will feature outside vendors displaying their unique and attractive gift and decorative home items as well as traditional guild-crafted live greenery and accessories. It will be held at the Braintree Town Hall from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Entry to the sale and refreshments are free with a house tour ticket. Without a house tour ticket, there will be a $2.00 entrance fee. Ticket information and details will be published soon.
